When to start one to one lessons

One to one lessons are a great way to get focussed lessons that cater to your individual interests and learning style.

For children under 6 years old, a musicianship class is often the best great way to build confidence and musical security before starting one to one lessons. At Greenwich Music School we offer Fourtissimo! for 4 year olds, Music Club for 5 and 6 year olds, or Voyagers for 5 and 6 year olds who are ready to try out some instruments.

For students who aren't totally sure about one to one lessons, if you enrol then in the first one to one lesson your teacher will be happy to discuss and make a recommendation between one to one and group options.

Most instruments are suitable to start from age 5, ideally after some foundation musicianship experience - except for one to one singing, clarinet, flute are suitable from age 7, and saxophone from age 8. For younger children aged 5 to 7, recorder is a great option for those interested in playing woodwind and also prepares them to play flute, clarinet or saxophone later on.
